Photography for me is as much about connection as it is creation. Documenting Linda Tucker’s presentation on “Saving the White Lions” was a privilege. As I captured images, I was immersed in her passionate narrative about these majestic creatures, their unique genetic makeup, and the urgent need for conservation. The experience was profoundly moving, inspiring a deep respect for our planet and its inhabitants. It became evident that our role is not merely to consume but to be stewards of our shared home.
Global White Lion Protection Trust
The Global White Lion Protection Trust (GWLPT) leads efforts to protect and preserve the rare and endangered White Lions of the Timbavati region in South Africa. Linda Tucker founded the Trust in 2002, dedicating it to conserving these majestic creatures. The White Lions are not only genetically unique but also hold deep cultural significance for the indigenous communities.
GWLPT’s mission goes beyond just protecting the White Lions. It also focuses on restoring ecosystems and promoting ethical, responsible ecotourism. The organization collaborates closely with local communities to ensure that conservation efforts benefit both wildlife and people. Through scientific research, education, and community involvement, the Trust works tirelessly to secure a future where White Lions can thrive in their natural habitat.
My Experience Photographing the Event
Photographing Linda Tucker’s presentation was an incredibly enriching experience. The room was filled with a palpable sense of urgency and reverence as Linda spoke about the plight of the White Lions. My goal was to capture not just the event itself, but the deep emotions it stirred in the audience. The challenge was to convey the passion and determination that Linda and her supporters have for saving these rare animals.
As I moved through the room, I focused on capturing authentic moments—Linda’s intense expressions, the audience’s rapt attention, and the interactions between people who share a common cause. Each click of the shutter was a deliberate attempt to document the energy and commitment in the room. It was more than just an event; it was a powerful call to action.
Gear Talk
To capture the essence of this event, I relied on the versatility of my Canon gear. The Canon EOS 7D’s speed was crucial for freezing animated gestures and expressions, while the Canon EOS 5D Mark III’s image quality ensured that every detail was sharp and clear.
For wide shots that showcased the entire room, I used the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens. For close-ups and more intimate moments, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens provided the flexibility to zoom in while maintaining excellent sharpness.

I’ve worked with Jiho for several years, first at our previous “day job,” where we were colleagues. When I started the first of my own businesses a few years ago—Sprout Your Vision—I turned to Jiho for his help and expertise in setting up my website. I knew he had a keen eye and that he would be patient with me, a web noob (a term he taught me). While he didn’t agree with all of my initial ideas, he was patient and diplomatic at pointing out why some of my ideas were possibly not the “best” ideas, and he always gently pointed me in the right direction (and 99% of the time, he was right)! 🙂
Most recently, Jiho photographed a fundraising event I organized for the Global White Lion Protection Trust. His style was unobtrusive, and the photos turned out great–exactly what we needed to help raise awareness for the Global White Lion Trust that is working to save a nearly extinct species. He turned the work around quickly, and he was a true pleasure to work with.
